  1. Alright rant time. I used to have a distant admiration of 5e. I had never really put a huge amount of effort into learning the rules so from a distance it seemed ok. However more recently I’ve gotten my hands stuck into 5e doing a bit of DMing.

Oct 07, 2015  I feel I was able to build custom monsters WAAAAY easier in 3rd edition (I skipped 4th). I like 5E quite a lot, but am struggling trying to decipher what the game builders mean in the sections of towards the end of the DMG that detail how to build a custom monster. There’s charts and the content seems to conflict. While messing around with monster creation, I started comparing 5e Monster Manual creatures with the 5e guidelines for creating monsters (DMG page 274). Based on my number crunching, it looks like the DMG’s central monster creation chart, “Monster Statistics by Challenge Rating”, isn’t in line with the Monster Manual, and if you try to.

Simply by playing a show or chatting with right persons he can make others pay his modest life expenses. With a CR 3 this benefit goes to Comfortable, CR 10 Wealthy and CR 15 Aristocrat life style.
Contacts, Enemies and Allies: He knows a lot of people on his region and made a lot of good and bad choices during his life. He has a incredible high chance to have met or to be known by anyone. The GM can roll a d10 to see if another NPC know the Minstrel, on 1 the Minstrel is hated by the NPC, on 2-3 the NPC is unfrendly, on 4-7 the NPC don't know him, on 8 he has a minor connection, a friend in common, member of family, etc; on 9 the minstrel already worked for the NPC and on a 10 he is an old friend or someone who owns the minstrel a favor.

Ability Modifiers: +1 Wis, +2 Cha

Celestial Resistance: You have resistante to necrotic and radiant damage.

It's quite possible for a group to go from 1 to 20 with only a couple of magic items per character!

It should be noted that this does affect the balance between the classes.
Front of the MM says you (the DM) determine if the monster’s loot is in good enough condition to sell. It is not stated that you shouldn’t let the PCs loot monsters. PCs are clearly able to sell the loot monsters have by default. Just that there are ways for the DM to not let that happen you don’t want to deal with that in your game. There is no value judgement or intent or 'supposed to' ether way.
We haven't even touched on the market for monster parts. Even with the car crash that is the magic item crafting rules, that stuff's gotta be worth something to someone, even if it's a noble boasting of his T-Rex ivory fountain pen.

And as noted earlier, there's really no RAW place to spend it except on healing potions. Allowing buying of magic items tends to wreck the balance curve for a number of reasons if you play with 'typical campaign' treasure. As witness AL's problems as it basically has twice normal magic items found and it then on top of it allowed limited buying.

My problem is that *not* allowing the buying and selling of magic items is so catastrophically immersion breaking.
