Jan 07, 2016  Chicago, Illinois – As has become tradition, the focus of the DMG MORI Open House event at DECKEL MAHO Pfronten, Germany, January 26-30, 2016, will be on the latest innovations and groundbreaking technologies. In an exhibition space of 79,653ft², the machine tool manufacturer will be showcasing 90 high-tech exhibits live in operation – DMG MORI best-sellers as well as six world.

At the traditional DMG MORI Open House at DECKEL MAHO Pfronten the innovation leader will be presenting its diversified product portfolio with the DMG MORI best sellers as well as state-of-the-art manufacturing and automation solutions including six brand new high-tech machines from the field of turn-mill complete machining, universal milling, XXL large part machining and new technologies all on an exhibition area of 7,400 m². In addition, DMG MORI will demonstrate how customers can network their company organisation completely with the machine via CELOS and realise complex machining simply with the DMG MORI technology cycles. The machine tool manufacturer hereby responds to digitalisation and supports users on their path to an intelligent production in the direction of Industry 4.0.
Six world premieres
DMG MORI once again proves its innovative ability with the new high-tech machines. The CTX gamma 3000 TC 2nd generation in the turn-mill sector will be showcased, for example, while the DMU 160 P duoBLOCK and DMU 210 P expand the portfolio in universal milling. The DMU 600 Gantry linear will also be on show as the new exponent in XXL large part machining and the DIXI 125 in the field of high-precision milling. The ULTRASONIC 20 linear will round off the programme of world premieres.
CELOS and DMG MORI technology cycles for Industry 4.0
CELOS, the uniform user interface from DMG MORI, is as simple to use as a smartphone and networks all machines with the company organisation. This enables consistent management, documentation and visualisation of job order, process and machine data. 16 CELOSAPPs support the operator in the preparation, optimisation and error-free processing of job orders and today offer a solution for Industry 4.0. The DMG MORI technology cycles, with which complex machining in shop floor programming can be realised easily, round off the programme of the Open House in this segment.
Future-oriented technologies and branch focus
Another highlight is additive manufacturing in which DMG MORI intelligently combines laser deposition welding and 5-axis milling in one machine. In addition, the machine tool manufacturer focuses with its many years of expertise on special branch solutions for users from the aerospace, automotive, die & mould and XXL large part machining segments.

DMG MORI opened its Pfronten, Germany, plant to more than 8,000 visitors including journalists and customers for its annual open house January 26-29. Ninety machines were on display spread throughout 4,200 square meters of floor space, including six world premieres:

  • The CTX Gamma 3000 TC second generation turn-mill, with an extended turning length of 3,050 mm;
  • The DMU 160 P DuoBlock fourth generation universal milling machine, the largest model in its series with a work envelope measuring 1,600 × 1,600 × 1,100 mm;
  • The DMU 210 P second generation universal milling machine equipped with an intelligent cooling system to boost precision and long-term accuracy;
  • The DMU 600 Gantry linear XXL, a gantry-style machining center that can accommodate workpieces weighing as much as 150,000 kg;
  • The Dixi 125, the smallest in its series of high-precision milling machines designed for workpieces ranging to 1.250 mm in diameter; and
  • The Ultrasonic 20 linear second generation machining center, equipped with SmartSonic technology to automatically implement the ultrasonic frequency that is best suited to the actuator and tool.

That all these premieres build on past generations speaks to a point brought up during the event. In a press conference, DMG MORI President Dr. Masahiko Mori noted that the company is focused on improving the performance of existing machines, and placing an increased emphasis on streamlining its product line. The company aims to reduce its product offerings from around 300 to about 220 over the next year, with an ultimate goal of reducing that further to 150 or 160 total.

Along with consolidating the lines, the company is also moving toward more standardization, with components that will be interchangeable across products. For instance, a wheel-type toolchanger prevalent on machines throughout the plant is one such component. The modular ATC is a replacement for chain-type magazines and is said to be easy to maintain; one through five wheels can be combined on a single system. Standardized physical components like this simplify machine tool building and assembly, and make it easier to produce and supply spare parts to customers. Combined with the Celos control used across DMG MORI machines, the strategy also supports the implementation of process tracking and data-driven manufacturing.

Dr. Mori and Dr. Rüdiger Kapitza, DMG MORI chairman, also spoke about the company’s recent decision to serve U.S. customers directly rather than through distributors. In order to support this move, DMG MORI will open more technical centers as well as employ more local agents who can act as training and support personnel for customers. By providing a more direct link to users, DMG MORI hopes to provide better solutions to its users and also acquire more direct feedback to help it improve its products.

  • The Evolution of the Y Axis on Turn-Mill Machines

    Introduced to the turn-mill machine tool design in about 1996, the Y axis was first used on a single-spindle, mill-turn lathe with a subspindle. The idea of a Y axis on a CNC originated from the quality limitation of polar interpolation and the difficulty in programming, not from electronic advances in controls or servomotor technology as one might commonly think.
